Introduction Paragraph

The first effect a slum has on the human population is that they are dirty. The reason why is because no one maintains them clean and are all used by everyone. For an example a slum is an overcrowded area where lots of people live, so which means that millions or thousands use the same toilet. The thing that is explainable is that some do not have indoor plumbing or at all an area to do your business. Another reason would be the sewage treatment the quote says, "And you can smell. A few steps into Kiberia, we encounter brown-green water flowing through an open ditch." The slums could also be dirty by the millions pieces of trash or people who litter. The reason for this is so many people live here they can not afford to pay someone to clean for them. It should not mean though that you can clean it up yourself maintain the area where you live in. This also has to do with the place being so overcrowded and the little space everyone has.
